How to Create a Project Starting From a Template

In this tutorial you are going to learn how to create a project starting from an empty template.

Note: Designrr does not recommend this option as the main way to create a project or ebook.

The recommended workflow is to start with your content first. This means importing your content, writing it inside Designrr, or creating it with Wordgenie AI. Your content is then saved as a Manuscript in the Docs section, and from there you can create your ebook, flipbook, Kindle book, print book, or other project type.

Starting directly from a template is mainly useful if you want to browse and preview the available templates before choosing a design.

Important: This option should only be used with Standard templates. Do not create an empty project using a PRO template, as PRO templates are designed with predefined layouts and are intended to be used with imported or prepared content.

Preview a Template Before Using It

If you choose to start your Project from Template.

The template selection screen will open, you can browse the available templates. To check a template, click on the template you like.

A popup window will open showing the cover, fonts, and sample page layouts used in that template. You can use this preview to check the style of as many Standard templates as you like before deciding which one to use.

If you decide to continue, click Use this template.

If you only want to review the design, you do not need to click Use this template.

1. Create a Project From a Standard Template

Designrr will create a new empty project using that template.

Because the project has been created directly from a template, it will open with placeholder content. The placeholder text is only there to show how the design works.

Do not delete template elements unless you are sure they are not needed. Some elements, such as the cover, table of contents, headers, footers, and back page, are part of the ebook layout and may be useful once your content has been imported.

2. Import Your Content Into the Template

To add your ebook content, go to the Elements panel on the left.

Drag the Import Content element into the project. Place it at the bottom of the existing Table of Contents page.

The Where to Import from? popup will open. You will see several import options, including Blog Post, Google Docs, Word DOCX, PDF, Copy & Paste, and Docs.

For this tutorial, select Docs.

3. Select Your Manuscript

The Import Docs window will open.

Here you will see the content saved in your Docs section. In this example, there is one ebook created with Wordgenie AI. Select the title you want to use by clicking on it.

Click the arrow to move the selected document into the Selected docs to merge section. Then click Import.

4. Review the Imported Ebook

After a few seconds, your content will be imported into the template. The ebook content will be formatted using the template style, including the fonts, headings, spacing, and page layout.

However, the main disadvantage of starting from a template is that some parts of the project are not automatically updated with your ebook details. You will still need to update the:

  • Cover

  • Table of contents

  • Headers

  • Footers

  • Back page

5. Update the Cover

Go to the cover page. Click on each text element and replace the placeholder text with your own title, subtitle, and author name.

You can also replace or adjust the cover image if needed.

6. Refresh the Table of Contents

Go to the Table of Contents page. Click on the Table of Contents element to select it.

Then click the Refresh TOC icon.

The table of contents will be updated automatically using the headings from your imported content.

7. Update the Headers and Footers

The imported content pages will use the template headers and footers. To update them, click on one header and replace the placeholder text with your own ebook title or preferred text.

Then click on one footer and replace the placeholder text with your own footer text.

The change will be applied globally to the other pages that use the same header or footer style.

8. Update the Back Page

Go to the back page of the ebook. Replace the placeholder text with your own final message, author bio, call to action, website link, or any other information you want to include.

9. Save and Publish

Once the cover, table of contents, headers, footers, and back page have been updated, the ebook is ready. Click Save to save your changes.

You can then click Publish when you are ready to export or publish the project.

Final Reminder

Starting from a template is mainly useful for previewing and choosing a design.

For most projects, the best workflow is still to create or import your content first, save it as a Manuscript in the Docs section, and then create your ebook from that content.
